Laboratory instrument used in research and clinical applications, comprising a holder or holding area for holding one or more microfabricated chips having arrays of microwells, and a picking pin having a sufficient resolution to pick material, such as cultivated bacterial cells, from selected microwells of the microfabricated chips and transferring the picked material to designated locations, the movement of the picking pin effected by precision robotics controlled by computer software
