Downloadable software in the form of an application program interface (API) that is embeddable into software or hardware to provide safety features to the software or hardware, the safety features provided by the downloadable software including, namely, indoor and outdoor location tracking for a third party to determine the exact location of a user or a standalone device, a digital panic button that is activatable by the user or standalone device, automatic recording of audio and/or video when the digital panic button is activated by the user or standalone device, connectivity to emergency responders, a ping-alert feature that alerts a third party if the user or standalone device does not respond or incorrectly responds to one of a series of periodic pings within a specified response period, a time-out feature that alerts a third party when a user or standalone device has not verified their safety status within a specified period of time after the user or standalone device has commenced an activity, the ability to transmit safety and personal hazard points-of-interest information to a third party, the ability to alert a third party to an emergency situation, a geo-blast feature that permits a third party to escalate a user or standalone device's alert by notifying additional third party users that are located within a specified geographic area in relation to the user or standalone device, a micro safety network feature that sends an alert to both users if the users exceed a specified distance from each other, a micro safety network feature that permits three or more users to generate a geographically-based group location based on the average location of all users in that group and have an alert sent to all members of the group if one of the users moves beyond a specified distance from the average location of the group, and a wireless device mesh feature that permits a user to digitally tether a first wireless device to a second wireless device on which the software is running, receive a notification when the first wireless device moves beyond a specified distance from the second wireless device, and force the first wireless device to broadcast its location to third parties
